Do you suffer from discomfort and pain?  There is a little known syndrome called Fibromyalgia that affects up to 3% of the population.  Fibromyalgia is just beginning to be studied, so doctors can only relieve the symptoms until they understand the causes.  Many report severe to mild pain can affect them which can be debilitating.  Doctors may prescribe pain killers for some cases, but try to use natural therapies where possible.  Some of the more popular natural therapies are biofeedback, chiropractic care and massage chair therapy.

The severe pain associated with fibromyalgia can be so debilitating that it can cause adults to miss work and to not participate in many activities.  Early diagnosis and treatment can reduce the pain of the syndrome, but as of yet there is not a known cure.  Many health practitioners use massage chairs to help to reduce the pain associated with fibromyalgia.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for FMS and research into the causes of this complex syndrome are just in the beginning phases.  Preliminary research is showing that women between the ages of 20 and 60 are the most susceptible.  Also, women are affected at a rate 20 times greater than men.  There is still so much to learn, if you have any questions, then you should consult with your health care provider.

Although there is no conclusive theory about the causes of FMS, there are many preliminary theories.  Some research shows that many of the symptoms tend to appear after having the flu or after having a stressing physical event.  It appears that the body is somehow weakened and its normal defenses lowered from the physical strain.  This lessening of the immune system may leave the body vulnerable to fibromyalgia.

One theory is central sensitization.  In this theory, researchers hypothesize that people with FMS have a lower threshold for pain.  This is believed to stem from an increased sensitivity in the brain to pain signals.  It is believed that repeated nerve stimulation causes the brain to change with an abnormal increase in the level of neurotransmitters.  In other words, the pain signals cause some memory in the brain, making them more sensitive causing them to overreact to the stimuli.

If a large disc protrusion is evident on the scan then a surgical removal of the disc prolapse is possible although this is less commonly performed than in the lumbar spine.
