To begin with we should recognize that Von Willebrand’s disease is a clotting disorder, in which your blood has difficulty coagulating normally.  For this reason, even the mildest scrapes and bumps can cause a lot of blood being shed, and this means beneath the skin as well as over it.  Because the blood flow can be excessive when the tissue is damaged, the resultant bruises can be fairly large and dramatic, and they can show up seemingly without reason.  Many people are floored when they discover such a large amount of bruising from such a minor bump or a scrape.

What are the causes of being afflicted by Von Willebrand’s disease?  For the greatest number of afflicted people, Von Willebrand’s disease is present at birth.  It is chiefly a hereditary condition where adults within a family pass it down to their children for generations on end.  There have been rare cases reported where Von Willebrand’s disease has been acquired by adults later in life.  In these rare instances, the problem has been found that the body has created auto-antibodies, which realistically destroy the material that causes clotting to happen effectively and quickly.  Considering this information, you’ll find that there are specific conditions which can lead to this affliction as an adult, the most likely cause being lupus.

Having said all this, is Von Willebrand’s disease a reason for you to worry?  To answer this question you will need to determine whether you have any of the added symptoms besides just bruising easily.  Generally, nosebleeds and bleeding gums are additional symptoms of this disease.  Woman’s additional symptoms may include excessive blood loss during childbirth and overly heavy menstrual flows.
