Lower Back Pain Massage: Exercise Ball, Sports Massage Techniques How To

www.psychetruth.net Lower Back Pain Massage Exercise Ball, Sports Massage Techniques How To In this free video, Sports Massage therapist, Ron Vaughn, is demonstrating some sports massage techniques using an exercise ball to relax and unwind the muscles so the chest and pecs can loosen and open up, freeing the spine to move into its natural position. Poor posture and a slouched, slumped back can contribute to a wealth of physical dysfunction and pain in the back, hips, butt, thighs, legs, arms, shoulders, neck, hands, and well… you get the idea. In this video, Christie Powell, head of physical therapy at Catz Austin, explains how poor posture can cause low back pain and other issues like carpal tunnel and sciatica. This video and the rest of the series will give you easy tips and exercises to alleviate pain and discomfort. Often when we are sitting at the computer, watching TV or movies, playing video games, and driving, we slump into poor posture and a curved spine. This exerts pressure throughout the entire body and over time will severely weaken the shoulders and back so that sitting correctly becomes uncomfortable. The only way to improve posture is to begin changing your habits and to try and get in the habit of reminding yourself to sit up straight. A posture-buddy at work is a great idea so you can keep reminding each other, or you can set a timer or alarm on your desk. Sports Massage Demo 3: Hamstrings & Glutes. Sciatica, Leg Muscle Pain Relief Austin In this video series, sports massage therapist, Ron Vaughn, explains more about muscles in the legs and why loosening those muscles (specifically the quads, hamstrings, glutes and related muscles) is important to improve performance and to ensure safe exercise with limited injury. The series looks at the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes and other muscles surrounding the knee, thighs, butt and hips. This video specifically examines hamstrings and glutes and includes a great foam roller technique for loosening those muscles yourself. He also addresses sciatica and pain in the sciatic nerve. Kate talks about why she turned to Ron for help with her back and leg pain and why she continues to need his support so that she can continue to run marathons and set new records for herself. Ron’s knowledge of anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, health & fitness and his experience in athletic training, sports & recreation give him a unique style of sports massage. Ron uses Swedish massage, hydrotherapy, deep tissue, Myofascial release, and trigger point, (ROM) range of motion, stretching, and strength exercises to correct soft tissue dysfunction. Massage Therapy Programs: Career Training Opportunities Today

sports therapy

Find Massage Therapy Programs in the United States and Canada.

Presently, students have many diverse massage therapy programs from which to choose.

How Can Far Infrared Therapy Help Me?

sports therapy
Are you seeking a safe, effective & non-invasive treatment to relieve your pain?

The therapeutic benefit of natural & effective non-pharmaceutical treatments has led the way for scientific research into “new materials” technology with the development of advanced bio-ceramic fibres as the result.

These new thermal textiles are providing us with excellent remedial support to help relieve the stiffness & soreness that can often be associated with gardening, sport, debilitative disease, general aging or injury.

These advanced textiles use natural bio-ceramic minerals woven into the fibres during the manufacturing process to retain your body heat which enhances the therapeutic benefits of soothing thermal therapy.

The good news is, with many people suffering severe allergic reactions to latex-based materials, bio-ceramic fibres are safe and non-toxic.

Far Infrared therapy garments and compressive supports, using the beneficial thermal healing properties of these unique fibres, are proving to be excellent arthritis treatments and are suitable for long term therapy as they are non-invasive and free from toxic side-effects.

If you suffer from a debilitating health condition, such as osteoarthritis or rheumatism, you may require an individualized combination of therapy garments to ensure you receive optimum health care.

For those of us who suffer pain, joint stiffness or discomfort, far infrared therapy clothes are proving to be a highly effective pain management tool.

Health Conscious? Try Massage Therapy

sports therapy
As one of the most ancient healing art forms, massage therapy is growing in modern culture, as well as in acceptance by the medical community.

While conventional medicine does have its place in healthcare, studies are finding that massage therapy is a natural complement to most conventional medicine treatments, and can be an excellent alternative therapy for those seeking relief from stress and common health conditions like backaches, and other musculoskeletal problems.

A number of sports teams, in fact, have begun facilitating massage therapy as one of many available on-site treatments for team players.

Because older individuals suffer from a variety of health conditions including arthritis, Alzheimer’s, heart disease and other age-related health issues, massage therapy may prove valuable in helping alleviate a number of these conditions by lowering heart rate and blood pressure, reducing stress and anxiety, improve circulation, and alleviating chronic pain, among others.

As a noninvasive and natural healthcare treatment, massage therapy has been proven to reduce muscular tension, alleviate emotional stress, and improve overall wellbeing.

Sports Massage – An Athletes Tale

sports therapy
For years I followed a basic regime and set out my own training schedule to target a particular run, however it wasn’t until I started using sports massage that I realised I’d been missing an important element in my training that soon raised my standard quite considerably.

Sports massage uses a number of specialised techniques and has helped my performance and hopefully prevented a lot of injuries.

It also helped me overcome a particularly painful calf muscle injury I suffered a few years ago.

Some injuries do need specialist treatment from a doctor or physiotherapist and a good sports massage therapist will advise you of this, but for day-to-day niggles, aches and pains sports massage is definitely the way to go.

Also, as I’m not a professional athlete and can’t afford (and probably don’t need) a coach or full-time physio, I find sports massage to be a cost I can bear and a therapy that I can benefit from.

Massage Therapy May Be Just What You Need!

sports therapy
They get relax and unwind while having their bodies massaged and pampered.

You have stopped and watched people get their back, shoulder and neck rubbed, but never thought it would be of any benefit.

Massage therapy is used to help treat painful ailments, decompress tired and overworked muscles, reduce stress, rehabilitate sports injuries, and to promote general good health.

This is all done by manipulating a person’s soft tissues.

Before beginning a massage therapy session, therapists conduct an informal interview with the client to find out about the person’s medical history and desired results from the massage.

This gives therapists a chance to discuss which techniques could be beneficial to the client and which could be harmful.

Because massage therapists tend to specialize in only a few areas of massage, customers will often be referred or seek a therapist with a certain type of massage in mind.

The Right Treatment For Neck Pain

It’s important to keep a few things in mind when considering a visit to a sports therapist for neck pain. Sports Therapy began with the intent of working with the mscles and ligaments and back related problems, and while most neck pain is related to spinal alignment, sometimes it’s not.

A sports therapistr should perform a thorough physical examination. Sports therapists clearly understand the risks involved in performing any spinal manipulation, especially to the neck, and only perform this procedure when it is the right treatment for the patient. The therapist will learn the patient’s case history and perform a physical,  examination before performing any treatment.

Headaches, neck pain, and numbness or tingling in the arms and hands can be linked back to misalignment of cervical vertebrae but also commonly are related to muscle tightness.

Many times this neck pain may be caused by tension or posture issues which can be fixed in one or two visits with a skilled practitioner, even if it has been chronic. This may also correct how they deal with the tension they carry around in their muscles and whether that translates itself into back or neck pain or not.

When determining if sports therapy is the right answer for your neck pain, you can consider visiting with your primary care doctor first if you have any concerns about issues related to any of your health conditions. He or she can help determine other treatment options or if sports massage is appropriate for your condition. If you do decide that sports therapy treatment is best for you, look for someone who is recommended or seek out a referral from a trusted friend or family member.

The sports therapistr may then recommend treatment that includes massage, heat, cold therapy, ultrasound, and electric stimulation in addition to the spinal adjustments. The additional therapies complement the main treatment; the spinal adjustment.

Sports massage is designed to help atheletes prepare their bodies for optimal performance, recover after a big event, or function well during training.

But you don’t have to be in the Olympics to benefit from sports massage. Sports massage is also good for people with injuries, chronic pain or restricted range of motion. This is the type of sports massage that you see in the spa.

What Happens During Sports Massage?

Sports massage is a type of Swedish massage that stimulates circulation of blood and lymph fluids. Some sports massage movements use trigger point therapy to break down adhesions (knots in the muscles) and increase range of motion.

There are four types of sports massages:

* pre-event sports massage — a short, stimulating massage 15 – 45 minutes before the event. It is directed toward the parts of the body that will be involved in the exertion.

* post-event sports massage — given within an hour or two of the event, to normalize the body’s tissues.

* restorative sports massage — given during training to allow the athelete to train harder and with less injury.

* rehabilitative sports massage — aimed at alleviating pain due to injury and returning the body to health.

When Should I Get A Sports Massage At The Spa?

A sports massage is a good choice if you have a specific problem — a tender knee from running, for instance. It is also be a good idea to see a movement therapist, who can help you identify and correct the movement pattern that might be causing your injury in the first place.

The therapist generally focuses in on the problem area — a frozen shoulder or pulled hamstring, for instance — rather than giving you a thorough full body massage.

Sometimes men who are new to the spa are more comfortable getting a sports massage because it sounds more masculine. That’s fine, even if they don’t have an injury.

No matter what type of massage you choose, the therapist should check in with you about what your needs and expectations are for the massage.

Thai Massage therapy is a very helpful type of massage therapy.

If you’re making an appointment for your next spa massage soon, you might wish to find out more about getting a Thai massage.

This massage technique is one of the oldest and efficient methods in history, and will leave you feeling relaxed as well as limber.

Your massage therapist might also refer to this massage as a conventional massage or passive yoga, since it stretches the muscles and serves to help you to get rid of any tension in different parts of the body.

The massage technique started in ancient India, and is based on the Ayurveda, which is a structure of natural science that Indians have used to treat illnesses as well as body ailments, and to cure diseases.

The thai massage is very analogous to yoga, because parts of your body will be stretched and extended to get rid of stress as well as muscle contractions.

You will also be put in a number of yoga positions throughout your massage, which makes it akin to a mild workout; this will also permit the blood to flow freely through your body throughout as well as after the massage, which can cut down on headaches as well as insomnia.

You can even get your body massages in a group of different people, similar to a yoga class.

And, you will not need any massage oil for your Thai massage either; your massage therapist will lean against your body through the use of their hands and forearms, and will implement pressure to each part of your body, including the pulling of the fingers, toes and ears so that they can make the joints more flexible.

Whether it is lower back pain, middle back pain, upper back pain, or neck and shoulder pain, following a comprehensive plan closely can relieve chronic back pain.

By making a few adjustments in your lifestyle, you can alleviate your back pain suffering, as well as improve your general health.

One of the most important things to relieve back pain is having good posture.

If you have chronic back pain, it may not be easy to automatically revert your sitting and standing posture.

However, with the advancements in scientific research, a new unique device, called The Turtle, has been developed to make good posture effortless.

High blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and chronic back pain are commonly developed when you are overweight.

Those with excessive weight commonly develop sharp back pain due to the additional strain on the spine.

Therefore, eating a healthy diet low in saturated fats can help you lose the excess weight that is straining your back.

Magnesium, calcium, and vitamin B-12 have been found to offer back pain relief, and thus, including foods rich in these elements are a great start to eliminating back pain via nutrition.

Foods that could help with back pain are: meat, poultry, fish, spinach, nuts, seeds, beans and unrefined grains.

Also dairy products, such as eggs, milk and other milk products will help prevent Osteoporosis, which also leads to lower back pain.

Be sure to drink plenty of water, as even hard tap water contains extra magnesium.

Exercises are necessary to prevent upper back pain, middle back pain and lower back pain, and it will also boost your overall health.

While you sit, you can use the Turtle for approximately 20 minutes to condition your back, which will then further your ability to perform effective exercises.

The Turtle works to eliminate back pain, while giving your back strength and stability; this allows you to complete tasks that were too painful to tolerate previously.

There are different types of therapy that have been recommended for lower back pain and upper back pain, including massage, physical therapy, acupuncture, and now, Turtle therapy.

Acupuncture: The procedure of needle insertion involves stimulating anatomical locations.

Ways to Get Back Pain Relief

More than 100 million Americans suffer with some form of chronic back pain.

This epidemic problem, represents the number one reason for lost productivity and efficiency in American Corporations today.

Whether you suffer with lower, middle, or upper back pain, it can be both debilitating, and compromising toward one’s work and lifestyle, making it difficult or even impossible to perform the most basic daily tasks.

Because of technological advances in the past 50 years alone, it is not uncommon for us to find ourselves sitting for long periods of time; weather in traffic, relaxing at home or just working on the computer for hours on end.

What most of us don’t realize, is that sitting is inherently bad for the back.

Because the seated posture creates an imbalance in the spine, which causes the back to age at an accelerated rate.

It’s no surprise then, that back problems have become the nemesis of our time, creating problems for millions of people everywhere.

And when lifestyle or cultural practices become a contributing factor in back pain, then it’s essential that we adopt effective strategies for improving back health and work to reduce all forms of spinal disease, which are preventable.

Various remedies, when applied regularly, can result in a reduction of painful symptoms, which, when combined with a few simple corrective activities, work together to restore the overall health of the back by eliminating or even reversing the things that lead to an accelerated loss of flexibility, mobility and function.

A naturally occurring analgesic, known as ‘Capsaicin’, also the main ingredient found in chili peppers, can be an effective natural pain reliever.

A cream or lotion preparation of Capsaicin is applied by rubbing into the skin, directly over the affected area.

While an initial stinging sensation is normal, a neuro-chemical pain transmitter, known as ‘Substance P’ becomes depleted as the Capsaicin is absorbed, resulting in a numbing of pain symptoms.

Available in most health and drug stores, a typical formulation of Capsaicin cream, will have an active ingredient concentration of 0.025%.

Yoga, through strengthening poses and breathing techniques, has been found to decrease upper back pain and lower back pain.

In a recent study, people suffering from chronic sharp back pain were monitored for 16 weeks.

The results proved that with regular yoga exercise, the participants experienced a significant pain reduction in disability and intensity, as well as a lowered reliance on pain medication.

People with chronic back pain can decrease their pain through yoga and conventional lower back exercises, which will exercise their muscles in order to strengthen them.

Conventional exercises, such as walking, biking, and water therapy, provide conditioning that strengthen the back, thus minimizing back pain.

Good posture, whether sitting or standing, plays a large role in maintaining the health of your back, and thus, impacts the level of back pain.

Whenever you are sitting down, ensure that your feet are firmly on the floor.

If you sit for extended periods of time, you can simultaneously treat your back with correcting devices, such as the comfortable Turtle, which aids relief by supporting your lower back.

While you are sleeping, it is best to sleep on your back to relieve pressure that causes back pain, and you can put a pillow under your knees for support.

One of the main methods of back pain relief which immediately comes to the minds of people with sharp back pain is massage therapy.

Use ice packs to relieve inflammation, pain, and swelling after an injury or extended use of the lower back muscles.

Eating nutritious foods that contain Vitamin B12, calcium, and magnesium can prevent and relieve lower back pain and upper back pain.

The most reliable sources of vitamin B12 are eggs, dairy products, and meat.

Magnesium has also been studied for back pain reduction, and from the 82 people studied, 76 individuals experienced less back pain symptoms after increasing magnesium in their diets.

One of the best new products is a versatile orthopedic device that has been proven to reduce lower back pain, middle back pain, and upper back pain, as well as neck pain.

Massages and Saunas are fast becoming the perfect way to be healthy and fit in a exciting way. Here are some details about massages and saunas.

Massages have been known to humankind since an eternity.

Massages are a sure fire way of relieving stress and pain.

A massage is simply the manipulating of the skin, muscles and tendons, the soft tissues of the body.

During a massage, the masseur uses his or her fingers, fists and palms to apply tension to the soft tissues of the human body.

The massage can be administered to the connective tissue, muscle, joints, ligaments and the lymphatic vessels of the body.

Though massages are mainly used to relieve stress and pain, they can also be used as a catalyst for healing from injury and increase or enhance blood cirrculation.

This kind of massage therapy is generally practiced by massage therapists.

However, other medical practitioners like osteopaths, chiropractors and physical therapists also use this form of therapy.Massages are also helpful for anxiety, pain, labor pain, infant growth, sports related soreness, alcohol withdrawal and cancer symptoms.

During a typical massage, the person lies down on a massage table or lies down on a pad on the floor.

There is a major difference erotic massages and therapeutics massages.

Further, heart patients should inform the masseur before going in for a massage.

Other factors one should keep in mind before going in for a massage are deep vein thrombosis, unhealed fractures or severe osteoporosis.

Apart from massages, saunas are another way to keep healthy and fit.

The Finnish first built the sauna in the fifth or eighth century.

A sauna is a closed place designed to experience hot or wet sessions.

A common session in the sauna lasts for 10 to 20 minutes.

This increased blood flow gives the human body important nutrients and promotes cellular activity and growth.

The skin capillaries as well as the sweat glands cool down in a sauna, while essential fluids are transferred to the skin during a sauna.

People with stable coronary diseases may be safe in a sauna, but people with uncontrollable heart diseases must stay away from saunas The blood pressure may rise or drastically in a sauna.

The Three Main Benefits Of Sports Massage

The Three Main Benefits Of Sports Massage

Sports massage can play an important part to any athlete’s life. It does not matter whether you are injured or not; it can deeply affect your body physically, physiologically, and psychologically. Here are a few benefits of sports massage you can take advantage of today.

To start with, let’s go over some of the physical benefits of sports massage. The first benefit is pumping, which is the stroking movements during the massage that suck fluid through blood vessels. By increasing the pressure in front of the stroke, it can loosen tight or damaged muscle tissue.

Next, a deep massage can stretch tissues that could not be stretched in the usual methods. All of the bundles of muscle fibers are stretched lengthwise as well as sideways. In addition, it can also stretch the sheath or fascia that surrounds the muscle thus releasing any built up pressure or tension.

As mentioned, you do not have to be injured to take advantage of the benefits of sports massage. Hard training can cause tissues to harden and become inelastic. Getting a sports massage can help reverse this by stretching the tissues and improve your overall tissue elasticity.

Now to the physiological benefits of sports massage, you will experience pain reduction. Tension and waste products in muscles can often cause pain. A quality massage can help reduce this in many ways. One of these ways includes releasing the body’s endorphins.

Another physiological benefit of sports massage is relaxation. Muscles relax through heat generated, circulation and stretching. Mechanoreceptors, which can sense touch, pressure, tissue length and warmth, are stimulated causing a reflex relaxation.

As for the psychological benefits of sports massage, there is a great deal of anxiety reduction. Through the effects mentioned thus far, relaxation is induced thus reducing anxiety levels.

Lastly, if a massage is done with brisk movements like what is done during an exercise, this can help produce an invigorating feeling. It helps you become used to the movements so that you experience far less tension and pressure during the actual activity.

There are numerous benefits of sports massage that you can take advantage of whether you are injured or not. A basic massage can help you physically, physiologically and psychologically. This article goes over just some of the many ways you can benefit from a deep sports massage. Take the time to find a masseuse that can treat you before and after various activities.

Massage Chairs

In recent years, chair massage has become one of the most popular massage options for both massage therapists and the clients they serve.

The primary reason is that the concept of chair massage is one that appeals to people who don’t normally take advantage of massage therapy.

Chair massage avoids the traditional massage setting, allows clients to remain fully clothed throughout the session, and takes less time overall.

In this way, those who may be intimidated by massage or who feel they cannot afford the costs are introduced to its benefits in a comforting, easy environment.

Although there are different types and sizes of massage chairs, most of them have the same basic composition: they have padded surfaces for the head, chest, knees, arms, and seating area as well as the ability to adjust to fit each individual client.

In most cases, the face is nestled in a horseshoe-like ring for client comfort.

The chair works with the client seated with his or her front to the cushions.

This exposes the client’s posterior side, granting the massage therapist access to the back, shoulders, neck, arms, hips, and even head.

Chair massage has actually only been around as a massage technique for several decades.

It originally came about as portable business-ready massage, a practice that operated under the premise that people busy at work could benefit from a brief massage brought directly to their door.

Over time, this idea caught on, and practitioners moved from bringing chair massage solely to the workplace to setting up booths in retail outlets, health food stores, airports, and conventions.

Most chair massage sessions are shorter in duration than traditional massage work.

Because the body is kept in an upright position or gently inclined, it exposes specific body parts in need of pressure-based massage.

Therapists are then able complete in five to thirty minutes what traditionally takes at least an hour, simply because they can focus their concentration on problem areas.

Some massage therapists also find that using massage chairs in place of massage tables is more beneficial for their own comfort, since they typically don’t have to bend over as far to reach the client.

Most of the massage therapy chairs are fairly simple in their composition, making them both easy-to-use and cost-effective.

The majority of the chairs currently on the market are portable, since the nature of the massage chair is one that it allows it to be taken from location to location to serve a wider client demographic.

They are typically constructed of aluminum, which is great for portability, but may not uphold through the years or be able to stand up to extensive wear and tear.

Some of the more popular massage chair specialties include trigger point therapy, thumb kneading, scalp massage, and any type of massage that focuses on the neck, shoulders, and bodily extremities – usually the parts of the body most affected by working over a computer in a business or other office.

Special certification is not required to be a chair massage practitioner, but those interested in practicing can either choose an educational center that includes chair massage in the curriculum or take continuing education credits specifically in the field.

Physical Therapy in Sport

With this method you get your joints and muscles energized during your session and it will also assist you in getting your blood flowing throughout your body at a rapid pace, which can help relieve muscle cramps and even assist you in getting a peaceful night’s sleep.

A stone massage therapy is normally available at a spa, and is comprised of stones that are heated, which are put at various locations on the body to relieve the pressure.

In the majority of instances, the stones are placed on and around the spinal cord to comfort the nerves and energize the nervous system, and the warmth of the stones relaxes and calms the joints.

Massage therapy is also an ideal tool to target certain areas of the body where you might be having problems with, for example if you have difficulties with your neck or back, there are specialized massages designed to relax the muscles in these specific areas and relieve tension and cramping.

How to Give a Massage Massage Techniques

Here are a few of the most popular techniques of massage along with their benefits.

Massage is one of the simplest and oldest forms of medical treatment used for easing aches and pain in the body and also for alleviating psychological problems like anxiety and stress.

Massage involves stroking and kneading the soft tissues of the body, the muscles and skin, using varying amounts of pressure, and has been in use in many traditional healing systems in the world like Chinese Medicine and Indian Ayurveda.

The practitioners of modern systems of alternative therapies such as reflexology and aromatherapy also use a variety of massage techniques.

The sense of well-being and relaxation that a massage creates is due to the nervous system being affected because the nerve endings in the skin are stimulated, which helps to release endorphins, the natural ‘feel good’ chemicals of the body.

It is these endorphins that are responsible for relieving aches and pains, along with stress and anxiety, because they reduce stress hormones in the body, like noradrenaline and cortisol.

Thus the damaging effects of stress are reversed because high blood pressure is lowered, and metabolism, respiration, and heart rate are slowed down.

More forceful massage improves blood circulation, which in turn results in body tissues getting a better supply of nutrients and oxygen and also stimulates the lymphatic system to clear away toxic waste products.

It helps in easing stiff joints and knotted and stiff muscles, thus improving flexibility and mobility.

In the US, this is the most popular type of massage people opt for.

Often, it is just called massage therapy.

In this system, the therapist uses smooth and long strokes, and circular and kneading movements on the superficial muscle layers, using massage oil or lotion.

This massage can be very relaxing and gentle.

If you have never experienced being massaged before, this is a good one to try out.

In this method, deeper layers of connective tissue and muscle are targeted.

The therapist massages across the grain of the muscle, using friction techniques and slower strokes.

Deep tissue massage is very beneficial for chronically painful or tight muscles, postural problems, when recovering from injury, or when the body experiences repetitive strain.

Being a stronger massaging technique, it may result in a little soreness for a day or two after the massage session.

In this type of massage therapy, one or more aromatic oils, also known as essential oils, are used, according to specific needs.

The essential oils that are used in the massage are selected because of their energizing, relaxing, balancing, and stress reducing characteristics.

The aroma of the oils helps to calm emotions.

Lavender and sage are two of the common essential oils used in aromatherapy massage.

Usually, a few drops of essential oil is mixed with a base massage oil, which when massaged on the body allows the essential oil to be absorbed by the skin.

In this, smooth stones that are heated are placed on various points of the body.

The warmth of the stones helps to loosen tightened muscles and stimulates centers of energy in the body.

Similar to shiatsu, gentle pressure is applied on specific points of the body in order to align the body’s energies.

However, additionally, stretches and compressions are also included.

Hence, unlike other systems of massage, you don’t merely lie there; the therapist stretches and moves your body in a sequence of postures, much like yoga, except that you don’t have to make the effort of getting into the postures.

Apart from reducing stress, it also improves range of movement and flexibility.

The therapist has to be qualified in pregnancy massage, and hence knows the correct way to support and position the woman’s body while giving the massage.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome And Massage Therapy

You could have a condition known as Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome.

Massage Therapy and Bodywork are very effective in treating conditions arising from muscular and connective tissue abnormalities.

In my San Antonio, Texas based Massage Therapy and Bodywork practice I often treat pain from various muscular and nerve entrapment syndromes including the supposedly rare Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome.

Like many painful conditions Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome responds quite well to treatment by massage therapy and bodywork.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome is the name of a painful nerve entrapment condition, in which the posterior tibial nerve is placed under abnormal pressure by the connective tissue forming the tarsal tunnel at the inside of the ankle and the other structures in that space like tendons from lower leg muscles.

Pain from Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome is usually found in the ankle, heel, and sole of the foot.

These causes include direct blunt trauma to the inside of the ankle near the tarsal tunnel itself; ankle sprains of the inner ankle are a common cause of this syndrome; and, this syndrome may also be caused by overuse and/or repetitive stress of the flexor muscles of the lower leg especially when fallen arches and/or over pronation is present.

The massage therapist could also use Myofascial Release techniques or Deep Tissue Massage techniques to release adhesions between the flexor retinaculum forming the tarsal tunnel and the tissues passing through the tunnel while also using muscle Energy Techniques to gently lengthen the same muscles to reduce tension in the tissues.

It is not meant to provide a medical diagnosis, only a licensed physician may diagnose Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome.

Does Sports Massage Hurt?

Sometimes sports massage can be a little uncomfortable, but it is only ever a ‘good’ pain – that is you will instinctively know it is doing good. Please remember that you are always in charge, so if you’re uncomfortable in anyway please say and we’ll try a different approach! Often clients will report having gone for a massage treatment with other styles of massage therapist and found it unsatisfactory, as it was far too light and not deep enough. There is certainly a place for this type of massage but it is not something we find our clients request very often here. Of course if you want it light, or lighter, please say – we aim to give a massage you want, not a massage that we deem ‘appropriate’.

It is not unusual to feel a little post massage soreness for a day or two after a remedial massage. This is normal and shows that useful work was done – and that the body is healing! Common post massage advice includes warming the area with a hot bath or a hot water bottle, gentle but progressive and persistent stretching and maybe even (if it for treatment of an injury) a little arnica gel. Arnica gel can be bought at Mother Earth Wholefood shop at the Healthy Living Centre as well as some branches of chemists. Try to get a strong, pure solution, ‘Vogels’ is a very good make.

If you are worried in any way about being sore, or have an important event the next day or two, please do communicate this, it really is no problem to work around.

Is Sport Massage Only for Sporty People

No on the contrary!

Sports massage has been used for decades as a treatment tool for both sporting and occupational injuries, as well as pre-sport, post-sport and as a preventative measure. Its continued use is down to its success in the clinical setting. However, a new piece of research may be about to discredit its use.

If you ask a sports massage therapist what the benefits of sports massage are, their answer is likely to include “an increase in blood flow”, alongside other commonly quoted effects, such as the break down of scar tissue, removal of lactic acid and stretching and realignment of muscle fibres.

From my personal experience of over 5 years practising sports massage, it is by far the most useful tool I possess, far beyond my TENS and Ultrasound machines! I use sports massage in the majority of my injury treatments, for everything from an acute or chronically sprained ankle, to lower back pain rehabilitation. It helps me to gain a good insight into the state of the underlying muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia as well as helping to stretch and relax tight muscles, release trigger points and break down adhesion’s and scar tissue. I also have a number of devoted clients, whom after seeing their flexibility increase, aches and pains reduce, sporting performance improve and injury rate decrease, make regular appointments for a massage.

My point is this…new research should always be welcomed as we do not, and probably never will, fully understand the human body and the effects that our ‘treatments’ have, especially those labelled complimentary. However, I also believe in the proof of success within the clinical setting. If a practitioner finds something works (even if only on a placebo or psychological basis), then why stop using it?

Improve Your Sports Performance With Hypnotherapy

sports therapy
Many of us dream of one day improving our golf swing, having a better backhand on the tennis court or beating a personal best time during a run.

Training and practice can achieve this, but hypnotherapy could also be used to help us reach our goals and make us better at our chosen sport.

Hypnosis techniques have long been used by golfing professionals but the therapy has become more popular in other sports including football, rowing, boxing and cricket.

Sports men and women are increasingly aware of the benefits hypnosis can bring to improving their performance alongside other methods such as sports psychology.

The psychological techniques Woods employs help him visualise his next shot and where the ball will go before ever having to swing a club.

By using this rehearsal in his mind, he can ‘act out’ a perfect shot which then aids him mentally as he actually steps up to strike the ball for real.

This works because the mind and body are linked in such a way that by preparing the mind in advance, there is a chance the body will react exactly as you would want it.

By focusing on only the good performances, you can push the bad out of mind preventing you from recalling past mistakes again.

With those bad experiences gone, there is less chance of repeating them when playing.

You can then just focus on a picture of exactly what you want to do, how you’re going to do it and the feelings associated with getting it right.

This is known as an ‘anchoring state’ which can be important when asking your body to react in a certain way.

Once this achieved, the therapist will use beneficial suggestion to help you control your sub-conscious mind and allow you to alter behaviour and feelings that have previously been detrimental to your sporting performance.

Hypnotherapy is widely used in sports men and women with long-term injuries too, helping them on the road to recovery.

A stretch out of the game can hamper form and leave you with feelings of anger and fear.

Oriental Massage

Oriental Massage

The culture of the orient is full of various manifestations of the power of touch. In many cultures of the Orient, massage therapy has been practiced and part of healing since ancient times.

Oriental massage therapy has also been extensively used as the principal method of relieving pain resulting from neuralgia.

These specialty massages have now become very popular the world over and are practiced extensively as part of spa and medical treatment

This resulted in a momentary lapse in the demand for manual methods of stimulating the muscles and tissues and a greater demand for electrical instruments specially designed.

However, authentic practitioners and genuine clientele realized the power of the pressure and rubbing action delivered manually and sadly, the oriental massage lost some of its prestige due to the unsavory image that was generated by certain ‘massage parlors’.

Oriental massage therapy is even used in intensive care units, for children and elderly people and even babies in incubators.

Aromatherapy Massage is a very effective part of Oriental massage therapy and uses the combination of the therapeutic properties of essential oils found naturally and specific massage techniques.

Reflexology is yet another form of massage that involves the extensive use of the thumb and finger pressure on the reflex points under the feet.
